Clinique Pretty Easy Liquid Eyelining Pen

It's been ages since I've had a guest spot and so I asked my lovely friend Lucy to oblige. Lucy and I were at school together and had the same surname and love of the Beatles and when you are 14 that is enough to forge a lifelong love. Lucy has the kind of face that doesn't need any make-up but as a make-up artist you can do loads of exciting things with. So she hoards me magazine tear outs that she things I'll like and sends lovely postcards from where she lives in Provence and when I see something make-up that I think she'll like I get it for her - very hard when someone is a make-up minimalist.

In May she dog-sat for us and mentioned that she longed for a good eyeliner to get a real 60s flick going on and so I dashed to buy her the Clinique Pretty Easy Liquid Eye Lining Pen - I've heard nothing but good things about it and was told that it was super-easy to use. I know that Lucy wants no-faff when it comes to liner so who better to review it for me?

Having never written a make-up review before I’m going to start with the basics, the name; Clinique Pretty Easy Liquid Eyelining Pen, eyeliner prĂ©cision extreme 01 black. For a complete make-up novice like me this is a good place to start as it has two of the best make-up related words in the title – pretty (yes please!) and easy. The fact the French description mentions the word precision is also good as I am notoriously slapdash and very unprecise about what goes on my face. Plus, I like an extreme eyeliner flick, like the ones seen on the models at the Fendi spring 2017 ready-to-wear show and Jean Shrimpton.

It has a soft, slightly flexible tapering nib (if that’s the right word?!) and a defined tip like a calligraphers pens. I found this SO SIMPLE to apply it was practically foolproof. The flat side of the brush snuggles into my lashes and I am able to get a really close, thick line. I was also able to get a fabulously thin line including a nice long cats eye flick. The soft nib tip meant I was able to extend the line right into the corner of my eye without it going everywhere and having to use a dozen earbuds to clear up the mess. It’s worth pointing out here that as much as I love a heavy laden lid I’m far too chicken to go full Amy Winehouse but I feel with this pen I could probably attempt it. Durability wise, it didn’t smudge and it easily lasted all day although I did notice it fading (this could very well be to do with my application process than the product itself though). I was also able to put it on in under 10 seconds at my desk which is a big bonus.

In writing this I confess I googled ‘How to review a beauty product’ and got a big long scary list of things to talk about, including ‘the price, and whether you feel it is value for money. If it is a high-end item, don’t forget that context.’ Well, it was a present and therefore fantastic value for (my) money. For me this is a ‘high-end item’ although I’m sure Chippy will find this hilarious; it is, without doubt, the most expensive thing in my make-up bag, which is about the size of an envelope. Which leads me on nicely to the packaging …this eyeliner is small! Super slim in a chic shiny black with silver lettering. I love it. It’s only a tad thicker than a pencil and I find the click on lid really easy to use.
